Black Walnut Hairpin Leg Bench by Ed

rounded walnut bench with hairpin legs

We couldn’t help sharing this gorgeous bench made by Ed. It’s made of black walnut sanded to a beautiful finish and paired up with hairpin legs. We thought this was a perfect example of what can be done with hairpin legs, for an original indoor / outdoor piece.

Black walnut is a highly prized wood that can fetch big prices. It is a heavy and strong wood though can be easily worked. It can be expensive and hard to come by so if you find a good specimen, jump on it! As you can see from Ed’s bench the wood is dark and fine-grained, making a beautiful and durable piece. Ed has rounded all the edges of the wood creating a smooth, weathered look that will make sitting on this bench a pleasure.

Here at Modern Legs we offer bench legs in addition to the standard hairpin legs. Both can certainly be used to create a beautiful and sturdy bench. Our bench legs come in both tube steel and flat bar and our hairpin legs come in many styles including the original hairpin leg, 3 rod hairpin legs, and Just the Tip hairpin legs. All of our legs are made here in the USA, and work well with many bench designs.

Check out our wide selection for your next DIY furniture project. And if you’re in the greater Boston area keep your eyes out for Ed’s amazing hairpin leg creations on Craigslist – thanks for sharing Ed!

It is hard to tell this TV stand is made from banged up old pallets without looking closely. Look at how beautiful and refined the finished product came out. It is amazing what some sanding and clear coating can do to give new life to old wood. It is also a great example of how folks can use shorter hairpin legs to create functional furniture. It is often easy to see the uses for standard coffee table or dining room table sized legs, but the shorter legs are a great option too. We offer customized leg heights to accommodate myriad DIY furniture projects. Our hairpin legs come in even sizes from 4″ – 30″ and in a diameter choice of either 1/2″ or 3/8″ so let your imagination run wild and know you’ll be able to get hairpin legs that will compliment your project. What’s the Best Way to Attach Metal Hairpin Legs?

stamped baseplate on metal hairpin legs

Attaching metal hairpin legs to the underside of your piece of furniture can be one of the most important parts of the DIY furniture experience. You will want to make sure they are securely attached to ensure years of happy furniture use. The hairpin legs come with the bracket attached – all as one piece of each hairpin leg. This bracket has pre-made holes in it to accommodate screws for the underside of the furniture.

square bar hairpin table legs on tablePerhaps the easiest tabletop or desktop to work with is a wooden surface with metal hairpin legs, we recommend wood screws for the project. If you are not sure what screws to use definitely consult an expert – your local hardware store should be able to recommend what to use. Typically you will want to have wood screws no more than three quarters of the length of your wood surface. If you are comfortable drilling pilot holes, you can also go this route to help prevent cracking the wood when drilling the screws in. Typically pilot holes are about half of the diameter of the screw itself. You may also want to use washers to help distribute the pressure of the screw to the base of the hairpin leg. As long as the head of the screw is wider than the hole in the washer, you should be all set.

The whole process start to finish will entail:

(1) choosing and ordering your hairpin leg of choice, be it the original hairpin leg, the square bar hairpin leg, the modern hairpin leg or one of our many other variations.

(2) Creating your tabletop. This can be a tabletop, bench, chest, or any other furniture you’d like to match with hairpin legs.

(3) Finishing the tabletop, if desired. This can entail any suitable wood finish such as oiling, varnishing, staining, or just unfinished wood if that is your preference.

(4) Attaching the metal legs to the underside of the tabletop with screws to ensure proper attachment.

(5) Place your new DIY furniture in its new home and enjoy it! Congratulations on your new piece of furniture and be sure to send us a picture of your creation!

DIY Furniture with Metal Bench Legs by Matthew

diy oak bench with metal bench legs

Matthew sourced the wood for this amazing finished piece from a neighbor that was doing some tree work. By adding our tube steel bench legs, he was able to marry the live edge of the wood with the sturdy clean lines of our bench legs. Here is the project described in Matthew’s own words:

My neighbor had cut down an oak in our back yard and had portions of the trunk rough cut into slabs at a sawmill. This slab was dried for about 2 years prior to working on it. Many hours with hand planes and sander resulted in a nice slab. Dimensions are approximately 78″ long by 12-16″ wide by 2″ thick. Tube steel bench legs are mounted into recesses on the underside which were routed and chiseled about 0.25″ deep so that the undersurface of the mounting plate is flush with the underside of the bench. It is finished with 3 coats of Minwax tung oil finish. It is a woodworking project that I could complete in 2 weekends. It retains the characteristics of the rough raw materials while looking clean and finished.

As Matthew mentions, the tube steel legs were recessed into the wood itself in a routed channel. This is not necessary to do in order to use our bench legs, but it does make a beautiful and more finished product. Nicely done Matthew – thanks for sharing! Your DIY bench looks great and is a great example of how a chore for one person in your community (in this case, his neighbor) can turn into a wonderful home accent for someone else.

Jerrod’s Entryway Table with ‘Twist’ Hairpin Legs

slim entryway table with hairpin table legs

Although our classic hairpin legs closely resemble the turn-of-the-century classic and are perhaps our most popular, we offer a variety of other styles of hairpin legs. The Twist hairpin leg is one such variation on the original. If you’ll pardon the pun, these legs are a twist on our original hairpin leg – literally.

Jerrod has taken a set of our Twist hairpin legs and turned them into a beautiful table. This beautiful table uses the light color of the wood and nicely contrasts the darker steel of the metal legs. Our hairpin legs come in a variety of heights…Jerrod chose to use a taller size to build this table. This style of table–both taller and thinner than average– makes a great side table, entryway table, or hallway table as it is convenient for grabbing keys or hats while you enter or leave a room and it is tall enough to offer usable space underneath.

Thinking about the placement and use of your table will help you determine the type of table top you will want as well as the type of finish you want to give your tabletop. Jerrod’s table has a smooth finish on the woodwork – even the edges are smoothed. The smooth edges are a good fit for an entryway table—they will ensure hands and clothing won’t get snagged on the way–great for tables that will be in well traveled areas of a house. Thank you for sharing Jerrod, we love your table!

Upholstered Bench Seating with Metal Bench Legs

cushioned bench with metal bench legs

There are plenty of ways to get creative with our metal hairpin legs. We see customers making their own wood tabletops and adding our hairpin legs to complete the table. But there are many people that use our metal legs to make benches as well. We offer two different styles of bench legs – flat bar bench legs and tube steel bench legs. These are heavy duty legs meant to handle the load of the added weight and motion of continual use. For a lighter use bench folks also successfully use our hairpin legs.

We’ve seen a great variety of beautiful wooden benches made with our bench legs, and our customers really enjoy the simple beauty of wood crafted into a rustic bench. But some of our customers have created beautifully upholstered benches as well.

Upholstering your own bench can be as easy as picking out fabric that works for the furniture’s intended use (a heavier-duty fabric will add more durability for heavier use furniture). Simply adding fabric on top of wood will add color and texture to the wood while still maintaining the wood’s sturdy characteristics. Adding padding between the fabric and wood will make a more cushioned surface. Fabric supply stores will offer both the fabric as well as the cushioning. There are also pre-made cushion tops that can be attached to the bench – and removed later if needed. There are many bench options – they look beautiful with natural wood, a fabric accent, or a padded seat. Let us know what you come up with…we love sharing your designs as inspiration!
