Presley’s Hairpin Leg Couch Table with The Twist Legs

closeup couch table with twist hairpin legs

We’ve been seeing a lot more behind-the-couch tables recently and we can see why. This style of table is very convenient for use during couch time without taking up a lot of space. Many living spaces have room for a slender table behind the couch even if there isn’t room (or desire) for a coffee table in the front. This beautiful table was made by Presley. Check out the slowly curving lines of this table. Our Twist hairpin legs go perfectly with Presley’s table. The soft curving lines of both the tabletop and the hairpin legs perfectly complement each other. Nicely paired!

We sometimes get questions about using our metal legs on hardwood surfaces. Should pads be used to protect the floor and keep the table in place? That is of course completely up to each user but there are situations where it makes sense. The end use of the table as well as the floor itself are both determining factors. But some folks have really enjoyed having them on their metal legs. As you can see, Presley has chosen to use them on this table. If your metal legs will be directly on a hardwood floor your concerned about scratches, it might be a good idea to pad the bottoms of the legs. Tables that may be bumped frequently or are in a high traffic area may also benefit. Some wood floors are more prone to dings and indents than others, so if protecting your floor is a high priority, it may be better to be safe than sorry. See our FAQ for more information on what pads might work well for our hairpin legs. Either way, we know you’ll love having your own piece of hairpin leg furniture in your home!

Mike’s Live Edge Walnut Tables with Just the Tip Hairpin Legs

walnut slab tables with just the tip hairpin legs closeup

One of the great things about being a small company is that we make each and every set of metal legs to order. One of the side effects is that we can change what we offer to meet customers’ needs. Our original hairpin legs are great many applications. They are a classic style recreating the original hairpin leg design that came out at the turn of the century. It is also fun to change the style a bit offering a bit of variation. Our ‘Just the Tip’ legs are a variation on the original hairpin leg where the end of the leg is positioned at a right angle to the rest of the leg – just the tip is bent out.

This style of leg was what Mike chose to use on this gorgeous set of walnut tables. Mike says:

This coffee table and end table are solid walnut slabs with live edges finished naturally. I searched many different styles and websites. This particular leg just kept pulling me back.

When I do my next project that requires legs I know where I will be shopping again.

Thanks for choosing our metal legs Mike, we’re glad they were just what you needed. Mike’s picture shows the detail of just how thick and sturdy our metal legs really are. There will be no problem with them holding up these large slabs of walnut. The natural edges look great and is well highlighted by the clear coat. Thanks for sharing these beautiful tables Mike, we can’t wait to see what you build next!

Nick’s Reclaimed Door Table with Tapered Angle Iron Legs

repurposed table closeup with angle iron legs

Here at Modern Legs our metal hairpin legs are just the tip of the iceberg. We love offering the classic hairpin legs and all they stand for. They are a timeless style originating at the turn of the century. Their continued use today demonstrates their versatility in our ever-changing modern lives. Despite the many variations on the timeless classic there are situations where a different style fits.

repurposed table with tapered angle iron legs Nick demonstrates that perfectly with this reclaimed door and angle iron metal leg match. Here’s what Nick had to say about it:

Thanks so much for the great tapered angle iron legs I used for my dining room table. They look great attached to this salvaged closet door I bought and refinished.

This table looks amazing! The refinished table maintains its character nicely with its shiny new finish. The straight edges of the tapered angle iron legs go perfectly with the straight form of the door. As Nick mentioned, this table is used as a dining room table. We offer different leg heights so you can make any style table you want – from coffee table, to end table, to desk. Our metal legs come in sizes from 4” to 30” – just measure from the underside of your tabletop to the floor to see how tall you want the metal legs to be. Once your new legs arrive you can drill some guide holes for the screws and then screw the legs into the tabletop. It’s as simple as it sounds! We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Nila’s Live Edge Couch Table with Hairpin Legs

closeup live edge sofa table with hairpin legs

Couch tables are a great way to provide living room table space without taking up a lot of room. Tucked closely behind the couch itself this style of table provides easy access to phones, glasses and drinks without hogging a lot of space on either side of the couch or breaking up a room the way a coffee table can. Even a thin couch table can provide an easily accessible horizontal surface as well as a surface for lighting, which is great for reading.

Nila’s table uses our original hairpin legs – a classic choice. As you can see the legs themselves are not positioned in the outermost corners of this table. That is one of the great benefits of making your own table – you can make it any way that suits you and the surface you are working with. Offsetting the legs on this table honors the individuality of the tabletop and highlights the curves and angles it brings to the table, pun intended.

Live edge tabletops create unique and gorgeous pieces of furniture that are always one of a kind. The dark and light colors in this piece of wood have been preserved by keeping the entire width of the log. They match the other colors in the room perfectly; drawing the space together. If you don’t have easy access to your own live edge slab simply look up your local sawmill or lumberyard and let them know what you are looking for. They can cut custom orders and may have a variety of wood types to offer. Before long you’ll be putting the finishing touches on your own hairpin leg table!

Rosewood Hairpin Leg Table by Mojo Reserve

Hairpin leg furniture can be simple or technical. Finding an old door and attaching hairpin legs is simple. This rosewood table by the folks at Mojo Reserve is a bit more technical. We love that our metal legs fit any level of woodworking you want to undertake! This hairpin leg table features rosewood and spline joints – two things that are a bit out of the ordinary from the standard table.

True rosewood is a member of the Dalbergia genus and they hail from all over the world. Their rich aromatic oils give them their name, their smell often persisting for many years. There are also rosewoods that are not “true” as they come from a different genus, but still carry the name as they share similar visual and aromatic characteristics. Rosewoods have been used in furniture making for centuries and are all strong and heavy.

Spline joints, as seen in this table, is one way to strengthen separate wood pieces to be joined for the final product. Dovetailing is a method commonly seen in the corner of drawers and tongue and grove joints are a frequent flooring joint. A spline joint is similar to tongue and groove joints but unlike the tongue a spline is freestanding and not a part of either board before attachment. The strip of wood is inserted into grooves made in the two boards to be joined.

Although the spline joints are highly functional, they are also visually appealing. They strengthen the tabletop and add eye-catching variety to the two ends. We love the way the dark color of the hairpin legs blends in with the darker colors of the wood and gently contrasts with the lighter colors – like the wood does within its own colors. Another example of excellent hairpin leg furniture!

Cora’s Live Edge Walnut Bench Leg Bookshelf

closeup flat bar bookshelf with custom metal legs

Every one of our hairpin legs and bench legs are made to order out of high quality materials – but that is just where the project begins. What truly makes our metal legs amazing is what our customers do with them. Your ingenuity and imagination is what brings each set of metal legs to life. Our hairpin legs can make a slab of wood into a table, desk, or stool. And just because we label our flat bar and tube steel metal legs as bench legs doesn’t mean they can’t be used for many other amazing projects.

flat bar bookshelf with custom metal legsCora’s bookshelf proves this point perfectly. What an amazing work of art! Our bench legs are designed to hold up a substantial amount of weight and the thickness of these wooden slabs will hold up to the same challenge. What a perfect pairing for a bookshelf –anyone who has ever moved books knows, they can get heavy in a hurry. The slabs themselves are really beautiful and the dark metal of the wood nicely compliments them. Here’s what Cora had to say about the project:

I used live edge walnut slabs from Full Cycle Woodworks of Tennessee for this bookshelf unit with your fabu legs. Thanks very much — I’m in love with it.

We love it too, Cora. Thanks for sharing! Just like our hairpin legs, our bench legs are made of durable steel so you can rest assured they will give you outstanding performance. The flat bar bench legs used in this shelf come in standard bench leg sizes. They are made from 1-1/2” x ¼” steel and are 15” high. If you have a custom size in mind, drop us a line and we’ll let you know if it’s doable – chances are we’ll be able to accommodate. And don’t forget to send us a pic of your creation when you’re done, we’d love to see it!

Hairpin Legs and Reclaimed Barn Board Table

closeup sewing table with hairpin legs

Many of us wish we had space for our hobbies. It can feel like we need another room or a garage to properly organize our activity of choice. Megan showed us how her beautiful hairpin leg table has made sewing that much better. With a small amount of space and the right amount of table, her sewing room dream came to life! Not only does this hairpin leg table give Megan a place to enjoy herself, but it was also made by her loved ones.

My husband made this sewing table for me from barn wood that was re-claimed by himself and my father, from an early 1900’s barn located north of Atlanta, Georgia. I had been searching for hairpin legs and finally found your site! Was so pleased with them, and it was special to support a local artist from the state where I grew up!

We just loved these. Thank you so much!

hairpin leg sewing table sewing table with hairpin legsIsn’t it wonderful to have a homemade table to sit down at when you are ready to sew? We’re so glad we could be a part of this project. Megan’s table points out how much character reclaimed wood brings to a project. This slab makes a perfect tabletop; it’s beautiful, holds the character of the barn from which it came, and serves the purpose she needed it to. The thickness of this tabletop allows it to span such a sizeable distance while maintaining its structural integrity. The durability of the metal legs will nicely support the tabletop itself along with all of the use it will endure. Thanks for sharing Megan, it’s an amazing table!

David’s Oak Bench with Tube Steel Legs

closeup of wood pillow on tube steel bench

With so much mass manufactured furniture these days, custom made furniture is both unique and refreshing. Even when someone builds a piece of furniture from scratch, they don’t usually start with a tree! That is what David did when a tree fell at a friend’s place. Here’s what David has to say about his process:

When a grand oak tree fell in a friend’s back yard, my urge to reuse and create took over. The process involved drying and cutting the wood [then] curing the heavy slabs for 18 months. Then came the planing and sanding. With a coat of epoxy, a beautiful deep-grained custom bench was born. Your beefy tube-steel bench legs are the perfect compliment to the bench.

oak slab bench with tube steel bench legsThanks for sharing, David – what a treasure you’ve created! It can be a long process to start with a tree (or any raw wood) but the outcome was a piece of furniture that will last a lifetime and is truly unique to you.

If you are interested in undertaking a DIY furniture project but are not sure you have all of the equipment necessary, there are places that will help out with such a project. A local sawmill will be able to cut custom boards, for example, or sell you boards if you don’t have your own fallen tree. The bench legs David chose are also a great choice. Of course, we have many styles of hairpin legs to choose from, but with this solid dense bench not only will the bench legs be sure to hold up all the weight, but they nicely compliment the solid look and feel of the oak itself.

Great job David!
